Three Styles, One Studio

NP Dance Studio teaches all three major styles - each with a different feel, music, and social scene:

  • East Coast Swing - the classic American style. Bouncy, energetic, and danced to jazz and rock and roll. The most popular starting point for beginners and one of the most fun dances at a casual social event.

  • West Coast Swing - smooth, slotted, and improvisational. Danced to blues, R&B, pop, and country music. One of the most versatile partner styles in existence - if you only learn one style for social dancing, this is the one.

  • Lindy Hop - the original style, born in the Harlem ballrooms of the 1920s and 30s. Improvisational, joyful, and full of character. A favourite among dedicated enthusiasts across Chicago and Illinois.

West Coast Swing - The Most Versatile Style You Can Learn

West Coast Swing deserves special mention because of how broadly useful it is. Unlike most partner styles that are tied to specific music genres, West Coast Swing works with almost anything - blues, soul, R&B, country, pop, even contemporary hits. This makes it one of the most practical skills for social events you can develop, and it has a dedicated and growing community of practitioners across the Chicago, IL area and nationally.

It also has significant crossover with country dancing - students who take our lessons in Naperville often develop West Coast Swing alongside Two-Step and Nightclub Two-Step, since the styles complement each other naturally.

What You Will Learn

  • The fundamental swing rhythm and partner hold for the style you are working on

  • Lead and follow technique - how to communicate through movement so you can move with any partner

  • Turns, passes, and combinations that build progressively

  • Improvisation skills - especially important in West Coast Swing and Lindy Hop

  • Musicality - how to feel and respond to the specific music each style is danced to

What to Expect in Your First Lesson

Most students start with East Coast Swing. Your instructor will introduce the basic triple-step rhythm, the dance hold, and the rock step that underpins all the styles in this program. Within one lesson you will have something real to practice - a basic pattern and the framework to build from.

If West Coast Swing is your goal from the start, your first lesson will feel different - focused on the slot, the connection, and the improvisational conversation between lead and follow that makes the style unique. Either way, the $60 introductory offer covers two full private lessons so you can explore the style and the studio without any further commitment.

The Social Scene in the Chicago, IL Area

Dancing to live music or a DJ at a social event is a different experience from practicing steps in a studio - and it is ultimately the goal for most of our students. Chicago and the surrounding Illinois area have a genuinely active partner movement community, with dedicated social nights, festivals, and workshops happening year-round across multiple styles.

NP Dance Studio hosts regular social parties in Naperville and Aurora - a welcoming environment where students from all programs come to practice together. Many of our students find that attending these events is where their dancing genuinely clicks.
