Ballroom dance is an art form that feels both timeless and universal. Many people first discover it through wedding dances, competitions, or shows like Dancing With the Stars. Or in this fast-paced world, TikTok.

On screen, it may look effortless, but what you don’t see is how powerful dancing is behind the scenes. What those moments don’t show is how deeply dancing affects the mind, body, and emotions in general. Even for complete beginners walking into their very first lesson.

At NP Dance Studio Naperville, IL, we see this transformation every day. Students arrive after a long shift or a stressful week. You can see only by their posture that they’re carrying tension in their shoulders and heaviness in their mood. Yet by the time they leave, something remarkable happens: they stand taller, breathe easier, smile more, and move with a sense of lightness they didn’t have when they walked into our dance studio.

And that’s why it’s even better if you’re starting as an adult. Adult dance classes in Naperville, IL, are a great way to be one step closer to a healthier you!

What Is Ballroom Dance And Why Learn It?

This is a partner dance that blends rhythm, technique, and connection. These dances are traditionally performed in ballrooms and social gatherings (just think of the Bridgerton ballrooms).

They are often divided into two main categories: smooth dances (such as Waltz, Tango, and Foxtrot…), and rhythm dances (such as Cha Cha, Rumba, Swing, Salsa, and Bachata…)

Why should you try ballroom dancing?

It’s not science-fiction, any kind of dance strengthens your mind, body, and soul. Learning steps and coordinating with a partner challenge the brain, improve memory, and enhance focus. Physically, it strengthens muscles, improves posture, and provides a full-body workout. Emotionally, it releases dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins. These neurochemicals help regulate mood, motivation, pleasure, sleep, and pain. They are also very important in creating feelings of happiness and well-being.

But the best part..The best part is that the community here is incredibly supportive, and everyone encourages each other. So if you’re a beginner ballroom dancer, don’t be shy!

Starting Ballroom Dancing as a Beginner

You don’t need a partner to start. Many adults join our classes solo. In private lessons, your instructor will act as your partner. In group classes, we rotate partners so everyone has a chance to learn and connect.

Ballroom and Latin dance lessons for beginners can feel intimidating at first. But most of our students find that after a few lessons, they can perform basic routines, and lead and follow with confidence.

Popular Ballroom Dances to Learn

Standard Dances

These are the dances you often see in classic films. They are characterized by flowing movement around the entire dance floor, a graceful posture, and elegance.

  1. Waltz

The granddaddy of all ballroom dances, the Waltz is known for its dreamy, romantic elegance. Think sweeping turns and a graceful “rise and fall” motion. It is danced in 3/4 time to classic pieces like The Blue Danube.

Why Learn It?

It’s the perfect foundation dance. The Waltz teaches you essential skills, such as posture and how to move in harmony with your partner.

  1. Foxtrot

Smooth, sleek, and effortlessly cool. The Foxtrot is often described as "walking with style" to big band or jazz music. It's versatile, fun, and less rigid than the Waltz. In 4/4 time, it’s danced to artists like Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé, and Ella Fitzgerald.

Why Learn It?

It’s the go-to social dance. The Foxtrot's basic box step is easy to grasp, making it fantastic for beginners who want to look good on the dance floor quickly.

  1. Tango

Dramatic. Intense. Passionate. Unlike other smooth dances, the Tango is characterized by sharp, staccato movements and strong head snaps. And of course, a strong connection between partners. The most iconic Tango music is, of course, Argentinian Tango. Ballroom (American or International) Tango, on the other hand, has its own powerful sound.

Why Learn It?

If you want to make a statement, learn the Tango. It’s a powerful dance that builds confidence.

Latin Ballroom Dances

If you want to learn Latin ballroom dances, get ready to move your hips!

These dance styles are typically performed in a smaller area of the floor, and are more rhythmically complex. They’re focused on hip action, playful flirtation, and expression.

1. Rumba

It’s a slow, sensual, and deeply expressive dance. It tells a story of romance and seduction through controlled, fluid movements. It’s danced on slow, soulful 4/4 time ballads. An interesting fact, rumba is often called the ”dance of love”.

Why Learn It?

The Rumba is the foundation for hip motion in Latin dancing. Once you master it and its controlled, weight-changing movements, you can apply the technique in all other Latin styles.

2. Cha-Cha

The Cha-Cha is a lively, fun dance that gets its name from the distinct three quick steps (cha-cha-cha) that replace the slow step in the Mambo.

Why Learn It?

It’s an absolute mood-lifter! The Cha-Cha is energetic but has a manageable tempo, and it is one of the most popular and accessible Latin dances for beginners.

3. Salsa (A Latin Nightclub Favorite)

While technically a "nightclub" dance, Salsa is a cornerstone of most social dance scenes and is a must-learn for any dance enthusiast.

Why Learn It?

Salsa is everywhere! Learning it opens up a whole world of social dancing opportunities. And besides, it’s a fantastic exercise!
